Oils & Acrylics

My goal for a painting is always a colorful, textural, expressive piece of art. I want you to see the marks and imagine them being laid on the canvas. Each subject is filtered through human eyes, mind, and distilled into a physical creation through human hands. I unapologetically embrace the imperfections and brush marks. It’s what makes them beautiful and unique (not too unlike humans themselves).

I like to use acrylics for blocking in an underpainting and for texture, and then I finish in oils (tho not always!). This allows me to quickly rough in a painting, layering and adjusting with a quick drying time. Once the foundation feels solid, I’ll move onto oils. This allows for more subtle blends of colors without disturbing the underpainting, as well as adding the “glow” that only oils can give.

I’ve also been experimenting with acrylic spray paints, acrylic markers, and oil sticks lately! I love mixing mediums, taking advantage of their unique properties and layering them in interesting (but always archival) ways.
